ABOUT TRINQUETTE & PULP'S BOOKS

Hello readers, so if you follow the store's blog you will know that we'll have a stand at the Angouleme Festival next week and that we'll be debuting three books from our second wave of co editions with Trinquétte.

Well two of the artists will occasionally be joining us to sign copies of their new books at our stand at Le Monde des Bulles (Hall # 2), so if you fancy a copy of Walder The Art or Travels by Didier Crisse signed by the artist then drop by our stand.

I should make mention of our new partner in this unique publishing venture, The Labyrinth
Dan Merisanu is the owner manager of this very cool store at 386 Bloor Street W. in Toronto, Canada and he shares with ourselves and Alberto Ruiz a passion for animation, gaming and comic art, as well as illustration.
And just like Pulp's Art, The Labyrinth stocks a wide range of art books and sketch books and joining us and Alberto in publishing art books was a perfectly logical step for Dan.

So when all 18 of the exciting second wave of our co editions arrive in February you'll notice the Labyrinth's logo along side Pulp's Books and Trinquétte, we're very happy Dan is with us helping to find artists and fund publishing their work.

In closing this post I'd like to invite professional illustrators and artists to contact us if they like the idea of partnering up with us to publish a collection of their art.

NEW AT PULP'S ART JANUARY 24

Hello readers, what this week's delivery lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality but before I give you the skinny on these books I'd like to remind you that Pulp's Art will be at the 40th International Festival of BD in Angouleme, next week.
You can find us at the usual spot in town of La Monde des Bulles Hall # 2, rue Frères Lumière but this year we wont be hidden away in a corner but front and centre facing our Marvel loving pals at Panini Comics.

OK to the books now and here's a title sure to be a hit with his numerous fans,

FRANK CHO WOMEN BOOK 2
HC 80pp Color Black + White
Image
Frank's deep appreciation of the female form is made very clear in this second collection of sketches and finished illustrations all featuring voluptuous women in various states of dress and undress!
Frank's heavy work load has put his self published books on hold but this attractive and affordable book is certain to please his many fans and those of good pin-up art; it's also certain to offend the puritanical, heh heh!

Frank's a connoisseur of the classics and they don't get much more classic than this next title,

MAD ARTIST'S EDITION
HC 156pp Black + Whie
IDW
Back in the 1950s EC set the standards by which all other American comic publications were measured, none of their competitors matched their unique and sophisticated  approach to the genres they presented in the medium of the 9th art form.
They are constantly referred to and are seldom out of print in one form or another, arguably their most original and influential publication was Mad.
When it was released in 1952 Mad rewrote the book on parody and satire, it's lampoons of comic strips, cinema and TV were hugely popular and hugely influential on the comics and the comedy which followed.
The roster of creative talent working on Mad was among the best ever assembled and in this enormous book, presenting the pages in their actual state, you can experience something like the thrill of Harvey Kurtzman and his team when the artist handed over the finished art.

Classic work but from the field of animation as we finally bid welcome to,

WALT DISNEY STUDIO ARCHIVE NINE OLD MEN FLIPBOOKS
Box with 9 HC books Black + White
Disney Editions
To serious students of animation they are somewhat like the "founding farthers", Disney studio's "9 Old Men" have an almost mythical status because of their enormous influence on the medium of animation and their sheer talent.
Each of the gentleman is represented by a flipbook showing their drawing skill in capturing character and creating movement from one of the studio's wonderful films from their golden age of 2D animation.

The world of Pop Surrealism often loves to borrow and distort from old comic strips and animation, just think of Todd Scorr's work and it just so hapens Todd is one of the luminaries in this book.

HEY! II
HC 300pp Color Black + White
Ankama
Hey magazine has been championing the best in Modern Art from around the world for the past few years, last year they held a wonderful exhibition at the
Musee De La Halle St. Pierre and produced a fine looking catalog to go with it.
Well it's a new year and they've a new exhibition and a new catalog.
In this wonderfully produced book you'll discover both the delightful and the disturbing art created by sixty of the hottest talents around.

Bringing the curtain down on our review of the new stuff is a rainbow creation from Yoshitaka Amano,

DEVA ZAN
HC 300pp Color
Dark Horse
In his long and illustrious career Mr Amano has illustrated plenty of stories for other creators but finally after 10 years of work, he brings us a story totally his own.
A dazzling marriage of text and images telling the story of a samurai plucked from the battlefields of feudal Japan and whisked through dimensions to marshal a force to combat the minions of chaos and darkness, to restore harmony to the cosmos.

We had lots of people inquiring after Sky, the beautiful box set collecting Amano's work on the Final Fantasy games but the limited availablity of that title meant meany went without. This gorgeous book will help those unable to secure a precious copy of Sky over any sense of disappointment.

We know you've been missing him, so Adnan will be back in the Pulp's Art house from Wednesday of next week, while I hassle on down to Angouleme to set up our stand and hopefully sell some great looking books to the faithful.

NEW AT PULP'S ART 16 JANUARY

Hello readers nothing new  to report from the USA this week, so before announcing some nifty looking books from over here, let me tell you about our plans for the 40th Annual & International Angouleme BD Festival at the end of the month.

You can find us at the usual location of La Monde des Bulles Hall # 2, rue Frères Lumière, from January 31st to February 3rd and yes this is the opening weekend of the 6 Nations, damn you comic geeks!
Anyway, as usual we'll have a selection of the best art books covering comics, games, animation and film, along with classic illustration and strips, from main stream and niche publishers.
We'll also have sketch books direct from artists you know and appreciate and others you'll enjoy discovering, we will also be debuting some advance copies from our " Spring Collection" of books co published with senior Alberto Ruiz of Trinquétte.
The three Pulp's Books /Trinquétte titles to be launched look like this,

and are by Soleil's Didier Crisse, Humanoides and Delcourt's Johan Mark Walder and Dark Horse and Akileos' JP Kalonji, each album is 48 pages of fabulous art.

Copies will be limited and the books then wont be available again until the main delivery arrives by boat from Asia some time in February.

It will be an exciting and international range featured in our " Spring Collection " with artists from as far south as Argentina, as far north as Iceland, as far west as the USA and as far east as Israel, with plenty of artists from countries in between making up the final tally of over 15 new books.
Keep checking on this Blogspot to find out exactly when these beauties go on sale.

If you love BD and or great art, why not come along to one of Europe's biggest and best celebrations of the 9th art?
There will be books and artists galore for you to enjoy, simply go to www.bdangouleme.com for all the info and booking details.

We turn to the celebrated Franco Belgian tradition of comics to announce,

Silas Corey: LE RESEAU AQULA # 1
HC 64pp Color
Glenat
It's Spring 1917 and while the war continues to rage in the North, veteran Silas Corey must come to the aid of the French government to foil the intrigues of German spies and traitors.
An excellent tale of daring do penned by Fabien Nury and wonderfully illustrated by animation's loss and BD's boon the talented Pierre Allary.

To another fabulous artist and thoroughly nice chap now and again one who cut his teeth in animation,

PIEGE SUR ZARKASS # 1
HC 48pp Color
Ankama
Ankama continue their adaptations of the oeuvre of Stefan Wul into comics form with this treatment by the classy duo of Yann and Didier Cassegrain of
Piége sur Zarkass.
With Didier called upon to illustrate the adventures of two gorgeous lady adventurers exploring a strange lush environment, the emphasis is on that last syllable in the title, yay!

Finally a BD and not a Manga derived from Capcom's popular game,

DEVIL MAY CRY: LES CHRONIQUE DE VIGIL
HC 47pp Color
Glenat
Izu writes and Pat Pion draws this tale of big coats and big swords at the disposal of our big demon batteling heros!

Next week we'll finally get some honest to goodness American books including Frank Cho's Women 2, the as big as it's beautiful MAD artist's edition and finally the new Disney Archive featuring flip books by Walt's tame "9 Old Men"!

In closing I'd like to bring to your attention the news that British high street retailer HMV, a nation wide chain of stores selling DVDs, games, books and music is in difficulties.
Bricks and motar retail stores have heavier over heads than their internet competitors, some of which are willing to operate on a margin at which a high street shop wouldn't clear their over heads and would sell at a loss to match the inernet retailers pricing.
A variety of companies have disappeared from American main streets and British high streets, they're not coming back, in many city centres and down towns it is nearly impossible to find a book shop, while more and more outlets are given over to fast food and odd sounding coffee based drinks.
I'm a consumer too and I understand the attraction of being able to buy for less but if you place a value on service, choice, encountering like minded people and being able to browse and review items before spending your money then spare a thought for real shops.
Please support your local retailers, oh and respect creators and support artists too, thanks!

NEW AT PULP'S ART JANUARY 9

Hello everyone, well the first American delivery of 2013 brought us some great books and none more so than this eagerly anticipated title,

GIL KANE'S AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ARTIST'S EDITION
HC 216pp Black + White
IDW
Landmark issues in the adventures of Peter Parker a.k.a. the Amazing Spider-man, including #s 96 - 102 and 121, are reproduced just as the editors at Marvel received these pages from master draftsman Gil Kane, in the same size, with visible corrections and the corporate markings, etc., in this extraordinary book.
These Artist's Editions are always popular and are seldom reprinted so please call in or contact us soon to ensure you have your copy because a book like this - reprinting as it does one of the medium's most popular characters as depicted by one of the finest artist from this field - is sure to be a huge hit!

Another ground breaking comic artist with a unique and unmistakable style is..

NEAL ADAMS' SAVAGE SKETCHBOOK
SC 48pp Black + White
Continuity
An intriguing glimpse into the mind and method of Mr Adams as he presents a good number of pieces in various stages of finish but all expressing his signature dynamism and verve and all concerning themselves with pulse pounding action.

(Fans of Neal Adam's work might like to know we have a small number of his Continuity Studio's portfolio available, which is a showcase of his art in a variety of styles and covering even more themes.
These days they'd probably use an I-pad or Tablet to showcase and display work but this is still an interesting insight into how pros promote themselves to potential clients.)

From the medium of comics to that of games now as we head to the,

ART OF BORDERLANDS 2
SC 272pp Color Black + White
Brady Games
This book is exactly what fans of this futuristic action game and fans of this genre and medium would want in a visual guide to the development process behind creating the characters, their arms, transportation and their environments for this second installment in the game's franchise.
I'm reading that as well as the visual treats one would expect from a well produced art book accompanying a top game, the text contextualizing the eye candy is also excellent!

We stay in the world of games put switch futuristic shoot 'em up for high fantasy, in..

PERFECT WORLD TOP GAME PROMOTIONAL POSTERS 1
SC 160pp Color
CYPI Press
Perefct World is the studio behind some of the world's most popular on line games and this is the art book which let's you in on all sorts of fabulous stuff you wont easily find else where.
Some of the company's top designers such as Fan Junfeng, Liu Maoyong and Guo Feng discuss their work on existing games and future releases, including
"War of the Immortals ", "Perfect World International", "Celestial Warriors" and "Dragonsword" to name but a few of the glittering games featured in this incredible looking book.
If the art work of Jo Chen is to your taste then I'd suggest you will thoroughly enjoy this great looking over sized edition, crammed with fantasy imagery given an oriental twist.

We stick with fantasy art but unrestricted by any medium as we review..

FANTASY+ 4 WORLD'S MOST IMAGINATIVE ARTWORKS
SC 192pp Color Black + White
CYPI Press
This latest volume collects some of the best illustration and plastic art concerning its self with fantasy, from as many mediums as use fantasy as a vehicle to entice, promote, inform and inspire.
Comparisons with Spectrum and Ballistic's Expose will be inevitable but Fantasy + isn't trying to be either and in its favor is the fact that unlike these other excellent titles it often serves up a significant selection of work by the featured artists.

Finally back to comics but of the off beat Underground variety now,

JIM WOODRING PROBLEMATIC SKETCHBOOK
HC 364pp Black + White
Fantagraphics
Jim Woodring draws like some latter day Hieronymus Bosch or Pieter Bruegel but with out all that religious angst, his hallucinatory realms are scary without being as all out terrifying as those created by the Dutch masters.
So this sketchbook features Jim's signature weird, including gross images worthy of Basil Wolverton but also scenes from the street and the countryside.

Hope you folks are getting the hang of our new hours and if your partner drags you out into the soggy streets of Paris for the sales, then why not take a break from the hustle and the hassle with some fine looking books here at Pulp's Art?
I hope to see you here soon.

NEW YEAR BRINGS CHANGE TO PULP'S ART

Hello readers, welcome to our first posting of 2013 in what one hopes will be an exciting and prosperous year for all of us.

There are no new books to report as of today because there's no US delivery this week, so I'll take this opportunity to update you with our news.

With Adnan's departure I'm on my own and our other activities will need my attention so the shop hours will change starting next week.

From January 7th the store will be closed on Mondays and open during the rest of the week from 13.30hrs - 19.30hrs, Saturday will be a full day with a break for lunch between 13.00 and 14.00 hrs.

(Often I will be working in the store in the mornings and clients needing a specific item need simply knock on our door to gain access but those customers wanting to browse at length are asked to call in during the afternoon and evening.)

So what's in store for us in 2013, well as Pulp's we'll be attending various Salons and Festivals, the first being Angouleme at the end of January.
We'll also be continuing our co publishing with Mr Artbook, Alberto Ruiz of Trinquétte/Brandstudio fame, expect an exciting new batch before Spring.

The store's brief remains to bring you the best in Entertainment and Illustration art in print.

Again thank you for your continuing support, I look forward to seeing you soon here at Pulp's Art.
